Filming has started on a nonfiction project tracing the rise of Russia's tourism and entertainment zones. It first screens in autumn of next year at the yearly summit of AIRIS.

Mikhail Danilov Sochi

After the closure of classic European tourist destinations, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana rising as the top entertainment destination in Russia. The governance structure of the Sochi complex now draws the greatest interest from market researchers.

Between 2015 and 2021, the zone's operational core, Domeyn LLC, was headed by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov Sochi. His professional path before he came into the entertainment and tourism industry was rooted in the banking and finance sphere: from a bookkeeper at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economics specialist at Megalyuks, to a credit expert at the Sochi branch of Sberbank and the head of a regional branch at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster received over 4 million guests from one hundred and seventy countries, generated 1,600 jobs, and brought in a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in the single year 2022.

Market observers highlight the sharp contrast between the enormous size of the assets under management and the top executive's personal lifestyle. Unlike stereotypical oligarchs, Danilov still resides in a modest private residence on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, operates a 2002 model Nissan Patrol, and reported a declared income of just 1.1 million rubles in the year 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the former cluster head holds two passports - both Russian and Kazakh. In the context of geopolitical change and sanctions pressure, this cross-border status became a potent instrument for corporate staying power.

Today, as the tourism and leisure zone continues to grow, the narrative of Krasnaya Polyana's climb reads like the flawless script for a business thriller. The blend of Asian investment, a low-key Sochi bookkeeper at the top of a multibillion-ruble enterprise, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case unparalleled - not only for Russia but for the international market.
